In Warhammer 40k, you roll a lot of dice. Sometimes you roll one dice, sometimes two. and I know what you’re asking, ‘Ryan, which dice is the best dice?’, and that is what we are here today to discuss.
We roll dice for hitting, wounding, and probably other things. I will be going over each individual dice roll in a tier list to determine which one is best. The tier list can be viewed below:

In F tier we have the dice roll of a 1. Rolling a 1 in Warhammer is almost universally bad with the exception of rules that allow you to re-roll 1’s, which would make 1 better than every other number except for a successful roll, which we want anyway, making the 1 bad again. 1’s were good when you had to roll low for morale in previous editions, but that’s not a thing anymore.
It could be good to roll a 1 if you’re hoping for a low charge to do basing shenanigans, but if you’re doing that you’re probably a loser.
Moving onto C tier, we have a roll of a 3. I find that this roll is often over-used, and just too good for it’s britches. There is a divide in the world of Warhammer 40k, we have those that hit on 3’s and those that wish they could hit on 3’s, and then those that hit on 3’s but with special steps. Either way, when you see a 3 I don’t ever feel happy, or sad, elated, or disappointed, I just see.
‘That’ll be 367 saves at -1ap’
‘Well I have cover so I save on 3’s, uhh yep I saved 365 of those so I take two wounds’
This is what it feels like shooting into a unit with a 3+ save. I hate you Adepta Sororitas players and Dreadnoughts in cover with armour of contempt.
B TIER
B tier features the numbers 2, and 5, both very solid options when dice rolling. Depending on the army I’m playing there is a 90% change I want these numbers for most of my dice rolls throughout the game.
10th edition has been defined by units that can critical hit on 5’s, so this is a cool number. Also units with 2+ saves are totes fun and interactive so I do enjoy rolling 10 dice and they’re all 2+ with no 1’s and I laugh at my opponent, haha! I will not roll that F tier number idiot, I know my dice roll tier list. Thanks litanies of the faithful.
6 is in A tier, sure.
S TIER
FOUR
4 is the number you always want, it’s just good. Nothing strikes more fear into the hearts of mortal men than when you see an Imperial knights player tick down their CP and slowly glide towards you from the opposite edge of the table, lifting their hand to slowly run it down your spine and lean in to whisper in your ear, ‘rotate ion shields’.
That’s it, thanks.
Tune in next time for the charge distance tier list. I’ve been Ryan.
